The Wild Road Home: A Telling of Iron John

In August 2025, The Fifth Direction offered a soulful one-day retreat on Wurundjeri country, where the Birrarung flows through story-rich soil and ancient gum. At the heart of the day was poet and storyteller Leon Cossar’s telling of Iron John—the beloved tale that became a cornerstone of mythopoetic understanding, carrying the deep roots of what it means to journey toward soul.

It’s a rare thing now to gather in the old way—in ceremony and ritual—but this was how it was when the storyteller arrived. People were drawn together in the centre of the village and one story might be enough to keep them warm for an entire winter.

We hope you make contact with this ancient understanding as you listen to this recording, which was the third sitting of the day when Leon told the story of Iron John in all its fullness.

This series is free to members of The Fifth Direction. For more information, visit here.
